The James-Lange theory has been controversial – when writing an article about his theory, James admitted that many other researchers were skeptical about his thoughts. One of the most famous criticisms of James Lange’s theory is Cannon Bard’s theory, which was proposed by Walter Cannon and Philip Bard in the 1920s. According to the theory, many emotions produce similar physiological responses: for example, thinking about fear and excitement leads to faster heart rate. Therefore, Cannon and Bard suggest that emotions do not only include our physiological responses to certain things in the environment. Cannon and Bard suggest that both emotional and physiological reactions occur – but this is two separate processes. Later theory, the Schachter-Singer theory of emotions (also known as the two-factor theory), shows that emotion is the result of physiological processes and cognitive processes. In essence, emotional excitement triggers changes in the body.
