The Fire Ring is a 25,000-mile (40,000-kilometer) horseshoe-shaped area with intense volcanic and seismic (earthquake) activity along the Pacific Ocean. The Fire Ring is named after its 452 dormant and active volcanoes, including 75% of the world’s active volcanoes, and is responsible for 90% of the world’s earthquakes. The Ring of Fire is a mountain range, volcanoes and treasury, extending north from New Zealand along the eastern edge of Asia, then extending eastward through the Aleutian Islands of Alaska and then southward along the west coast of North and South America. The fire ring is caused by the plate structure. The tectonic plates are like giant slabs on the surface of the Earth, often sliding sideways, colliding, and forced under each other. The Pacific plate is very large, so it borders (and interacts with) many large and small plates. The interaction between the Pacific plate and the tectonic plates around it creates enormous energy that, in turn, easily melts the rock into magma. The magma then rises to the surface as a lava and forms a volcano. With 452 volcanoes, some of the fire rings are more famous than other volcanoes. Below is a list of the main volcanoes in the fire ring. Andes – The Andes stretch 5,500 miles (8,900 km) south and south along the western edge of South America and are the longest continental mountains in the world. The Andean volcanic belt is located within the mountains and is divided into four volcanic areas, including active volcanoes such as Cotopaxi and Cerro Azul. It is also home to the most active volcano, Ojos del Salado. Popocatepetl – Popocatepetl is an active volcano across the Mexican volcanic belt. Located near Mexico City, this volcano is considered by many to be the most dangerous volcano in the world, as large volcanic eruptions can cause millions of deaths. Metric tons. St. Helens – The 800-mile (1300-kilometer) Cascade volcanic arc of the Cascade Mountains in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The waterfall contains 13 major volcanoes and nearly 3,000 other volcanic features. The recent eruption of the waterfall took place in Mt. St. Helens in 1980. Aleutian Islands – The Aleutian Islands of Alaska consist of 14 large islands and 55 small islands, made up of volcanic activity. There are 52 volcanoes in the Aleutian Islands, the most active of which are Cleveland, Okmo and Akutan. The deep-sea Aleutian Trench is also located next to the island and forms in the subduction zone with a maximum depth of 25,194 feet (7679 m).
